Community Health Day

Community Health Day was launched in 2001 as a day to provide the people of Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester Counties with health information. This is a health conference with topics delivered by health professionals in language for the public to understand. Each year we provide topics on diabetes, nutrition, physical activity, heart, kidney, foot care, dental care, and eye care. In addition,we offer education on one other topic which varies each year.
The day starts with registration and a light breakfast at 8:00 AM.and ends at 3:30 PM. It is a fun filled day of education, screenings, give aways and networking. Lunch is provided and the entire day's event is free of cost to the participants.
The prevalence of diabetes, and the burden of diabetes in South Carolina has continued to escalate since the 1980s. The complications of diabetes has placed undue burden on members of African descent. Statistics have shown such people have a high incidence of diabetic retinopathy, nephropathy, amputations along with other complications.
The complications of diabetes can be prevented by patients taking charge and practicing self management skills. These include healthy eating, increased physical activity, routine visits to the doctor to monitor eyes, blood pressure, kidneys, heart, and feet.
On November 3, 2007 we celebrated the Seventh Annual Community Health Day at the
International Longshoreman's Hall

The Shelton Project

The Shelton Project was launched in 2002 to provide the people of Port Antonio, Jamaica, West Indies with free medical care, health screenings, medications, health education and other medical assistance as deemed necessary by the Medical Officer of Health of Portland, and within the realms for Healthy Lifestyle Network, Inc to provide.
It is our goal that Jamaicans from everywhere will participate on a rotating basis so it will not be a financial burden. This mission trip is open to anyone of any race, colour, class, creed and nationality to participate as we seek to enhance the lives of the people in the community of Portland.

Our trip extends from one weekend to the next. Two days are alloted for travel. We devote 2 days to medical care, health screenings, and educational sessions, to the public and 1 day to the high schools.

We value the benefit of increased physical activity, so we are attempting to establish a venue for such activities. Our goal is to establish a walking trail, and a park type facility for the children.

The mission participants all pay their own expenses for the trip and all the people of Portland are provided services free of charge.

In Port Antonio we work closely with two local doctors, the Medical Officer of Health, the health department and the hospital.

Youth Healthy Lifestyle Jamboree

This program is designed to teach the benefits of healthy eating and physical activity to young people, and their parents. The day is filled with fun activities, and exposure to different types of activities that will increase movement. All events are interactive so the participants will have an opportunity to be fully exposed to correct techniques, fun and enjoyment.

Healthy eating educational sessions will be offered to all, divided into age appropriate groups. A healthy lunch is served.

Each year we work with the City of Charleston Recreation Department, the Charleston Battery and others including the three major TV stations to make this a day of fun, and education.
